Little Writers
How can we possibly rejuvenate the art of Letter Writing without inspiring the future writers of this world!? Impossible! Our workshops are designed to introduce Little Writers into the various ways letter writing can help us express ourselves emotionally but also connect us with friends and family in a very personal and unique way.
In Person Workshops:
Time Traveler Letters: Exploring My Past & Future Self!
Target Audience: Children aged 8-12
Duration: 2 Hours
(including two 15-minute breaks)
Get ready to become a time-traveling letter writer! In this fun workshop designed for our younger writers, we'll delve into our past experiences, remembering the fun times and reflecting on who we were at that point in life. Maybe we’d like to congratulate our past selves? Offer some advice? Give warning about life at big school!
Then, using our imaginations, we'll zoom into the future and write letters from our future selves, sharing our dreams and adventures! From this point-of-view, children can explore their hopes and dreams for the future.
Together we discover the basic letter writing techniques but we don’t focus on perfection. Mistakes will happen and that’s okay. This session is about creativity and storytelling. We touch upon the 10,000 Letter Challenge and show our younger writers how they can get involved.
Three Core Fundamentals: Connection. Authenticity. A Sense of Accomplishment.
How to Write a Letter: Famous Person Edition
Target Audience: Children aged 8-12
Duration: 2 hours
(including two 15-minute breaks)
Our Little Writers live in a world dominated by digital media. It’s everywhere. And it’s going nowhere. Here at A Letter Is Better we understand this and don’t shy away from the use of technology because it has so many amazing uses.
One of those uses, for better or worse, is being able to explore TV, Film and online content much easier. Young people are finding new influencers and instead of Liking, Direct Messaging or using any other form of digital communication, this workshop helps Little Writers understand the basic structure of a friendly letter and what key information to include.
How they can connect with greater meaning and authenticity. There will be lots of creative discussion about who these new influencers are and where to send our letters. We’ll also explore the difference between writing a letter to Captain America, or the actor who plays him on screen. Because both are in fact possible!
Finding and Writing to a Pen Pal
Target Audience: Children aged 8-12 years
Duration: 2 hours
(including two 15-minute breaks)
Our Little Writers might have heard the term Pen Pal, but do they really understand the positive benefits of having one? Do most adults? Is it possible to rejuvenate the art of letter writing without having a workshop designed to find and write to a new Pen Pal? Of course not! That would be crazy!
We’ll explore what it means to have a Pen Pal and all the safe ways to find one. Which is a really exciting aspect of the session because we’ll discuss all the possible ways we can connect with new people from around the world and the organisations that help us do it. Here we’ll use the internet to research our findings and ideas to ensure we are safe and able to supply parents with all the information they will need to support our Little Writers away from the classroom.
Pen Pals can also be a relative or friend, and this and much more will be explored through creative discussion.
For Adults
Slow down, connect deeply, and rediscover the lost art of personal correspondence. Our workshops help you refine your writing, enhance communication skills, and make letter writing a joyful habit.
In Person Workshops:
The How to Write a Letter Guide: Living Person Workshop
Target Audience: This workshop can be adapted to suit a wide range of
writing abilities and ages.
Duration: 2 Hours
Writing techniques are explored through creative discussion and idea generating. But to be clear, it’s not an English Language course. So don’t panic. No participant is forced to read out loud or punished for dodgy handwriting!
It’s about rejuvenating the joy of letter writing. It’s about connection. It’s an opportunity to be authentic but also develop key planning skills that will help us include all the relevant details, thoughts or stories that make up the core of our letter. Through creative discussion we explore the power of a strong opening sentence, understanding the kind of letter we want to write and why.
We’ll cover many other topics because that’s the effect letter writing has on the group. It invites conversation. It provides an emotional outlet and something very important.
The Three Core Fundamentals: Connection. Authenticity. A Sense of Accomplishment.
