Letter Link Project - South Devon
Connecting primary schools and residential homes in South Devon through meaningful letter writing. Reducing loneliness and inactivity for the elderly while simultaneously teaching our little writers about empathy, emotional expression and how to be inquisitive. And, possibly doing something even more vital... having fun!
The Letter Link Project in South Devon is an intergenerational initiative dedicated to strengthening community bonds and addressing isolation. By establishing a heartfelt letter-writing program between local schools and care homes, the project provides meaningful loneliness support across Devon.
This unique approach leverages creative writing to foster genuine community connection and enhance emotional wellbeing. The Letter Link Project offers a valuable platform where participants share experiences, practice patience and reflection, and rediscover the simple, profound joy of writing and receiving a handwritten letter.

Letter Link Project: Connecting Primary Schools and
Residential Homes in South Devon.
Letter Link is a unique, intergenerational project designed to pair primary schools with local residential homes for an ongoing fun and collaborative letter exchange.
The project’s key aims are centred on bridging the generational divide and enhancing community well-being by tackling several interconnected social issues. Sounds a bit heavy! Basically, we want to combat loneliness in later life by facilitating genuine connections between these two groups. And by using handwritten letters as the vehicle for emotional expression, the power of slow communication and meaningful interactions are explored as we leave the modern world of instant messaging behind. Just for a little while!
Why Does Combating Loneliness Matter?
Loneliness is a significant concern linked to serious health consequences, including declining mental health, reduced memory function and an increased risk of depression and early mortality. But inactivity is also such an important aspect of life we all should think about. Not just in our later years but right now! Today.
Children are growing up immersed in a world of rapid digital communication that often fails to cultivate essential social and emotional skills. This rarely teaches them the importance of patience, active listening, genuine emotional presence and the strength found in understanding vulnerability. Could this exacerbate feelings of isolation later in life?
This is not just their issue. It’s society. It’s all of us.
A Letter Is Better was created with Three Core Fundamentals in mind: Connection. Authenticity. A Sense of Accomplishment.

Let's look at the vast differences between 1950's and today.
There is such a huge difference between the worlds our Little Writers live in compared to the one our elderly residents experienced. And this provides so much creative discussion from both sides of the project during the workshop and will act as the main structure for our handwritten letters.
